Since the last START edition of ST Writer Elite, ver. 2.30,
appeared, ST Writer Elite has continued to undergo debugging and
improving. To summarize some of the changes, here is an abbreviated
list:
-Fix of a bug preventing deletion of a tab stop in GEM mode.
-You can now load a non-ST Writer file containing less than 24 bytes.
-Save feature in GEM mode has been altered to prevent saving to an
undesired filename. You must first "Save As ..." before "Save" is
activated.
-You can load multiple printer drivers. XYZZX.DAT is the default.
Others (with a .DAT extender) can be stored on the same disk and
passed from computer to computer with different printers. The user
can select the appropriate printer driver from the list.
-Save ASCII is now possible. Files thus created have a carriage
return/line feed at the end of every line. Top and bottom margins are
set automatically to 0, and the left to 1. Only the right margin may
vary, depending on which [Control G] font is selected -- larger right
margins for elite and condensed print (eg., maximum right margin with
condensed elite setting [Control G10] on a standard width printer
carriage is 160, and on a wide carriage printer in condensed setting
[Control G2] it is 198). With Save ASCII, any blank lines or trailing
spaces are cut off. If you NEED a space at the end of a line, make
the last character in the line elongated. This will place a null in
the formatted line following the character which acts like a space,
but will not be cut off. The formatter will then simply convert it to
a space, hex $20.
-ASCII files now load much faster. You are now asked if you want
these files loaded WITHOUT converting tabs to five spaces. (The tabs
are indicated as red "I's". If in turn you wish to save the file in
ASCII format while preserving the tab characters, you must surround
each [Control I] with [Control X] (see below).
-You can now output ALL of the 256 characters in the character set to
your printer with ST Writer Elite. To send a character with values
less than hex $20, you must use [Control X] BEFORE AND AFTER the
character. This prevents it from being identified as one of ST Writer
Elite's formatting commands. Most control characters use the
[Control] key in combination with an alphabet key with the following
exceptions:
To get: Use:
ASCII 0 (null) [ Return ]
[ Control A ] [ Control U ]
[ Control U ] [ Shift F5 ]
[ Control X ] \[ Control X ]
[ Control Z ] [ Control : ]
[ Escape ] [ Control [ ] or [ Control ; ]
ASCII $1C [ Control < ] or [ Control \ ]
ASCII $1D [ Control = ] or [ Control ] ]
ASCII $1E [ Control > ] or [ Control ^ ]
ASCII $1F [ Control ? ] or [ Control _ ]
-You may now directly load 8-bit AtariWriter files from a disk into ST
Writer Elite, and they will be converted to ST Writer format
preserving all formatting data. This ability has always been present
for files transferred via null modem directly from AtariWriter to ST
Writer, but not for files on disk.
As always, any bugs, let me know.
